Bypassing big city powerhouses…

Factors like population density and educational attainment will play a significant role in how quickly cities will recover from the coronavirus pandemic’s economic fallout.

Many of America’s most dynamic recoveries are poised to occur far from its financial and political centers, in small to medium-size metro areas. Here are the cities and suburbs best positioned to bounce back from the coronavirus pandemic, according to Moody’s Analytics:

Durham, North Carolina

Metro area population: 542,710

Multiple factors will likely speed up Durham’s recovery. The local economy centers around Duke University. Although the metro area is experiencing rapid growth (like all of the metro areas on this list), it has a relatively low population density making it well-positioned when America returns to normalcy.

Madison, Wisconsin

Metro area population: 880,520

Madison’s economy is also built around a major university (University of Wisconsin). It’s another medium-size city with a cultural scene far more vibrant than one unfamiliar with it would except. Although Madison has seen a boom in recent years, its population is dwarfed by larger regional metro areas, like Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul. But that could be to its benefit. Behavioral psychologists hypothesize that more people will view larger cities with a degree of skepticism never before seen in our lifetimes.

Denver, Colorado

Metro area population: 2,967,239

As one of the largest metropolitan areas on our list, Denver may not seem like an obvious choice. However, the metro area’s population density is low while its educational attainment is high.

Salt Lake City, Utah

Metro area population: 1,222,540

One of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, Salt Lake City, still has a frontier feel, partially because its rocky geography creates barriers of seemingly impenetrable wilderness between housing developments. Consequently, the metro area’s population density is much less than urban areas of comparable size.

Washington, D.C.

Metro area population: 6,133,552

The Washington, D.C. metro area has a lower population density than the rest of the Northeast megalopolis, likely sparing it from gloomy forecast confronting the other densely populated east coast cities.

Activities associated with larger cities like New York, such as riding in subways and attending Broadway shows, will be seen as inherently risky by millions of consumers for some time. There is typically more room to see the sights in D.C., and the suburban communities outside the city limits stretch from West Virginia’s frontier to Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay.

Des Moines, Iowa

Metro area population: 806,863

As the nation’s second-largest insurance hub, Des Moines has a robust financial sector. It also has a well-educated population and lots of opportunity for growth. Once the trade war with China recedes, the agricultural industries in the Midwest could be poised to do well.

Omaha, Nebraska

Metro area population: 970,023

America’s historic meatpacking center has evolved into a strong financial services hub with three NCAA Division I schools within an hour of downtown. Home to four Fortune 500 companies and the legal domiciles of two others for tax reasons, the workforce is particularly well-educated.

  3. The left has been blinded by Satan but they choose to follow him. He tempts them with the same things he tried to temp Christ with. But our Lord stood up to him and put him to flight. We must do the same, if we resist he will flee from us. Take away Satan and the left folds.

  5. Durham? Nothing for or against them
Wisconsin — Don’t like the state for the bad decisions them continue to make for muslim immigrants and for liberal politics. Hope they don’t do well.
Denver —- stronghold for liberals. Also against Christians. Don’t will them well either.
D.C. a square mile full of sucking leaches. They will milk the system.
Omaha, Warren Buffet and Union Pacific. Buffet is a selfish evil man. Union Pacific I worked for for 30 years. They are NOT for anyone but the top level of their company. And yes, they and Buffet don’t mind abusing their workers at all.
Des Moine? Don’t care for or against them. But I don’t like insurance in general. They seem to be headed by some of the most greedy men in the world.
