He played a key role in negotiating the Paris Agreement on climate change during his time as Secretary of State under the Obama administration. In early 2021, John Kerry was appointed as the United States first-ever Special Presidential Envoy for Climate by President Joe Biden. In this role, Kerry is tasked with leading the country’s international efforts to combat climate change and working with other nations to increase their climate ambition.
John Kerry, despite being a hypocrite for two decades while advocating for climate change, broke the news that he sold his beloved private jet.
Whitney Smith, a spokesperson for Kerry, confirmed the reports, saying:
“Secretary Kerry travels commercially in his role as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate… I can confirm the plane previously owned by his wife’s family was sold last summer.”
Kerry has been long criticized for his frequent trips on private jets, which notably produce more CO2 emissions than driving for commercial travel, as private jet use contributed 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
While Kerry and other climate activists consistently complain about the car use of Americans, the average car produces 8,887 grams of CO2 per gallon of gas, as opposed to many private jets, which can produce up to 1,700 kilograms (3747 lbs) of CO2 per hour of flight.
According to Fox News:
Fox News Digital reported in late July that the jet had made a total of 48 trips lasting more than 60 hours and emitted an estimated 715,886 pounds, or 325 metric tons, since Kerry assumed the position.
Despite the extreme amounts of CO2 emissions produced by private jet use, Kerry at one point ignorantly showed his privilege, telling a reporter that traveling by private jet is “the only choice for somebody like me,” also going on record saying he has to “fly to meet with people and get things done.”
