The House is set to go into an eighth election in an attempt to elect a Speaker of the House as McCarthy has, yet again, gone over the threshold of Republicans who can vote against him. McCarthy can have no more than five members of his own party vote against him, and so far there has been a consistent subset of roughly 20 Republicans who refuse to elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. If more than five Republicans refuse to vote for McCarthy he will be unable to reach the required 218 total votes to be elected Speaker of the House.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL) and Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO) have been leading the charge along with Republican Representatives Andy Biggs, Rep. Dan Bishop, Rep. Josh Brecheen, Rep. Michael Cloud, Rep. Andrew Clyde, Rep. Eli Crane, Rep. Bob Good, Rep. Paul Gosar, Rep. Andy Harris, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, Rep. Mary Miller, Rep. Ralph Norman, Rep. Andy Ogles, Rep. Scott Perry, Rep. Matt Rosendale, Rep. Chip Roy, Rep. Keith Self, and Rep. Byron Donalds.

McCarthy initially started with 203 votes before falling to 202, and after the fourth and fifth votes, McCarthy would go down to 201. The House is set to go into an eighth vote following the seventh vote, which is currently ongoing, however, five Republicans have already voted for a different candidate, so there won’t be a winner in the seventh attempt to elect a Speaker of the House.

As of now, and until a Speaker is selected, House members cannot be sworn in and will continue to use the Representative-elect title. The Clerk of the House, who is currently presiding over the vote, will continue to head the House until a Speaker is selected.

The voting will continue until a majority is gained for one candidate. This could take days or even weeks depending on how the member-elects vote. Though this will for sure remain close as the votes continue to come in.

  1. Good! McCarthy hasn’t done squat all these years and now wants to be speaker? Just another RINO who should get the boot…….Take Mitch the traitor with you and get out of town

  2. Newt Gingrich was a conservative firebrand and came up with the Contract for America. Is there anyone in the House with like convictions that will truly hold the Democrats accountable? Someone with creative ways to prevent Dems from taking us down the path of destruction, charted by them and Biden?
