Former Amazon CEO and the second richest man in the world Jeff Bezos (net worth 186 billion) has announced plans to launch himself into space as part of his Blue Origin space company.

As The Hill reports:

Jeff Bezos will launch into space next month on the first human flight for New Shepard, the rocket created by his space flight company Blue Origin.

Bezos, the richest person in the world, announced in an Instagram post on Monday that he will fly to space on July 20 with his brother Mark.

“Ever since I was five years old, I’ve dreamed of traveling to space. On July 20th, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend. #GradatimFerociter,” Bezos wrote on Instagram, adding his company’s motto, which is the Latin translation for “Step by Step, Ferociously.”

The trip will come 15 days after Bezos, the founder and current CEO of Amazon, transitions to an executive chairman role. The company’s new CEO, Andy Jassy, is slated to take over the post the same day, on July 5.

Bezos will be the first billionaire to set foot into space and possibly part of a new class of the ultra-wealthy for whom recreational space travel may become routine in the near future.

      1. Because Bezos is the scum of the earth. He seeks to censor ideas that he doesn’t like and he wheels too much power with that company of his. I don’t think the private space exploration should be allowed to occur. I think that should be the domain of governments only. And I am normally not a big government person at all.

      2. Bezos is just another POWER HUNGRY, GREEDY ELITE that thinks just because he’s rich he is now smarter than everyone else and should control everything / Everyone else. Look how he treats his employees. I call it “Bill Gates syndrome”. He was smart, made billions and that’s fine. Why do these people think anybody gives a used camel turd about what they do. I don’t want or need them to run my life for me. I’m not rich, but my life is my life and leave me alone. Just because he wants to go to space, fine and he’s paying for it Great!
Why should taxpayers pay for it? Let people move forward at their expense with their own resources or lives. History is full of people trying new stuff, some win, some fail.

The Wright Brothers didn’t wait or want the government involved in their work. If the government was involved we still wouldn’t have airliners, cars or anything else. Government writes regulations that sometimes almost impossible or very expensive to meet before there is actually a problem. They dream up stuff to “Protect the Public”. Stuff happens, but you can not cover 100% of every conceived problem, no matter what. But they have all your money and their whole career to try. If they succeed fine if not then they retire and get their pension with a warm and fuzzy they did a good job.

Aviation developed from pushing the envelope, some died, went broke, it’s all in “Progress” You pay you nickel and take your chances, just like everyone else. You see how well the government handled the Challenger disaster by going ahead with the launch when the engineers told them it was too cold for the O-Rings and they might fail. Politics involved instead of mechanics and you see what happened. Billions lost, crew killed and all for NOTHING that a 24 /48 hour wait would have solved.
