Former Republican President George W. Bush broke his silence over the weekend during a new interview with CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell.
The full interview is set to be broadcast on April 18th, an excerpt showed the former President discussing what he claimed was one of the biggest regrets of his presidency: failing to pass immigration reform.
Norah O’Donnell: “Still, nothing’s been done.”
President Bush: “No, a lot of executive orders, but all that means is that Congress isn’t doing its job.”
O’Donnell: “Is it one of the biggest disappointments of your presidency, not being –”
Mr. Bush: “Yes, it really is. I campaigned on immigration reform. I made it abundantly clear to voters this is something I intended to do.”
Bush also reportedly claimed that he is ready to ‘reenter’ the immigration debate within his own party and openly push for more immigration reform. Of course, ‘reform’ here likely means little more than full amnesty.
The interview comes as Bush’s artwork, a collection of portraits of immigrants, is now on display at the Bush Center.

Immigration reform should have been accomplished during George W. Bush’s presidency, but a combination of two factors doomed it: Democrats demanded unreasonable and destructive pro-illegal alien changes and Republicans like Rubio and McCain capitulated or outright colluded with them to put forth a “bipartisan” proposal that was anything but bipartisan. It was just another leftist proposal, and therefore, had no chance of being accepted by US citizens or passed by the Congress.
