A plan to pay black residents $10 million dollars with tax funds was approved by the city council of Evanston on Monday, making the northern Illinois town the first in the nation to vote in favor of a reparations program.
The measure to fiscally atone for past discriminatory practices that prevented African American residents from owning homes, or operating storefronts, was approved by 8-1 by council members. The city will dispense funds to programs designed to combat structural racism through their dispensaries.
The ten-year-long initiative will be entirely paid for with taxes generated by newly legal recreational cannabis sales. “We did not want the cannabis sales tax folded into our general fund and be spent in some way. Then we’d have to take it away from something,” commented Alderman Melissa Wynne.
The initial phase of the “remedy policy” will spend $400,000 providing eligible Black residents with $25,000 payments towards down payments, home repairs, or mortgage payments. “We are going to lead with housing,” said Alderman Robin Rue Simmons. To qualify for the grant, residents must have lived in Evanston between 1919 and 1969, or be one of their direct descendants.
Simmons is pleased with the outcome but doesn’t think the funds alone are sufficient. “It’s a first tangible step. It is alone not enough. It is not full repair alone in this one initiative,” she remarked. “But we all know that the road to repair injustice in the black community will be a generation of work … I’m excited to know more voices will come to the process.”
Evanston is not alone in their efforts to pay for past racial injustices, other cities including Chicago, Seattle, Providence, and Ashville have launched their own initiatives but have not specified funding methods, while blue states New York and Maryland have introduced legislation, and liberal leader California has already passed a bill.
On the federal level, legislation to create a national reparations commission to study and “recommend the appropriate remedies” has gained 173 Democrat co-sponsors in the House of Representatives.

If you studied the political campaign of Abraham Lincoln, you would have discovered his intention to not only prevent the education and advancement of black people in American society, he strove to send them back to Africa. What this article describes is a purely liberal measure, employing our taxes to ‘bribe’ blacks for their votes. You’re correct that they’re not deserving of ‘reparations’ as a race, because we’ve ALL had some form of slavery and hardship in our ethnic backgrounds. (I’m part American Indian. Our tribe was awarded government money after a lawsuit resolved the issue of land confiscation that was deemed improper. These casinos were a form of exploitation of the Indian culture. You’ll find that they were established by BIG Gambling interests to get around state prohibitions of that vice.) Dividing Americans to compete for government recognition has destroyed our culture, expanded the government to enormous proportions, and created a hubris of entitlement that will only encourage more Americans to seek compensation for some embellished historic wrong. As far as I’m concerned, Americans have been ‘wronged’ by Wars, Mass Illegal Alien intruders, foreign control of our government and rigged elections. I don’t believe reparations are forthcoming for those government shenanigans.
David as a defendant of the Monacan Indian tribe I’ve learned that my people suffered greatly under the Virginia government. They were forced to register as mulattos in the census. My family ran to Tennessee to escape the racism. But we don’t want handouts.
The settlers conquered the indigenous population, and that has occurred in most nations around the world. We’re not bitter, per se, about such historic events, since the treatment of Indians subsequent to their defeat was as humane as it could have been, given the circumstances. (Indian tribes in Oklahoma were provided royalties from oil industry profits when their lands became drilling sites for crude. Some strange tales about how those people spent their money arose from that region.) I do take exception to the gambling industry exploiting tribes to expand their casino territories, though.
I though the Indians discovered a new way to “scalp” whites via the gambling casinos. It only seems fair.
I’m afraid many Indians are getting ‘scalped’ as well. ‘Tell you what, get an effective campaign rolling to rally Americans to shut down casinos, then witness who’ll come out of the woodwork to shut down your campaign. Don’t be surprised if you see many LIBERALS engaged against your efforts.

The blacks were brought here by slave traders (After their tribes negotiated purchase prices for their ‘product’) so that would be justification of U.S. Citizenship. Liberals also assembled the KKK to further harass blacks.) Hence, we’re not the ones who sold them into slavery, or forced them to pick cotton and other crops. Blacks MUST understand that freedom and self sufficiency are not dispensed from Washington or State Governments. They can prosper if they subscribe to the principles of limited government, elbow grease and ingenuity, education and character development.

One thing I would do if I had the keys to this country is make sure each American has one national identity. People who give top billing to foreign countries as a means to delineate themselves from the gentry for ‘special’ treatment would be granted their wish: Transportation to the former, with a One-Way Ticket.
I wouldn’t have done that, since those people were brought here under duress, and left virtually homeless and destitute after the Civil War. What I would’ve done was give blacks the option to be returned to their native country (That would have rendered them as potential slaves, since their tribes sold them into slavery) or give them opportunities to construct communities with their 40 acres and a mule to forge their own livelihoods. I know what happened long ago is not pertinent, but I’m not the person who stirred up blacks with the history of Slavery, which–like the so-called “Holocaust”–has been milked for eons by the principle parties to gain financially, while demanding social prominence over the gentry in deference to their ‘suffering’. Blacks weren’t treated all that badly by their slave owners. They were sold by Slave Traders who dealt with tribes in Africa to attain their ‘product’. Indians were the prevailing population in what became “America” before the settlers arrived. They were defending their territories and happy hunting grounds as anyone else would. What causes ‘racism’ is cultural adjustments. People tend to gravitate to cultural comfort zones in order to maximize their chances to get hired, obtain financial assistance for schooling, housing and other expenses, and socialize with those who have common values, languages and other cultural trappings. It is sick, this has been tried before and it doesn’t work. New Jersey fixed a whole area helped paid for by Johnson and Johnson, built nice apts, beautiful downtown area and helped with jobs. They trashed the town. You can’t keep handing people money. Give them a job and let them work and see how hard it is to save and earn and to buy your own things. Provide good jobs so it can happen. This is a terrible idea and I’m sadden by it. How are you going prove who is a descendant of a slave or not. You know how watered down the blood line is and where is the paper work and the dna. Many others transferred from debtors prisons to serve as indentured servants for long periods of time. I believe the number sent to the colonies was in the 300,000 range. Where are the reparations for their descendants? After all they were slaves long before the arrival of the blacks.

In 1860, there were 350,000 slave owners in America. Over 98% were Democrats! How about the Democratic Party pay for the restitutions?
How will they know who are decendants of Slaves And will they also pay reparations to the decendants of White Slaves ?
All taxpayers should demand that white people who were slaves be included in the payout, that descendants of black slave owner be ineligible, and that defendants of white and black soldiers who were killed fighting for abolishment of slavery (along with the other two reasons for the war) be rewarded the 25,000.
And any of those people who are eligible , must have the sum total of the welfare they have received. Welfare is a form of reparations.

Asians, Mexicans, Irish and Italians to name a few immigrated to America, granted they were not dragged here in slave ships, but that was hundreds of years ago. What have the blacks done since then? All the other ethnic groups works hard, educated their children stayed in tight family groups and never asked the government for a dime. This is awful.. So, then I want Reparation payments for my Great Grandfather and Uncle who left their farms in South Dakota to go fight in that Civil War to free the men, women, and children from being held as slaves. They left because of their religious beliefs and what the Word of God says about slavery and being a free man and woman. They came back home to nothing. They had lost their farms and more. So you sick people who never was a slave and most of you never had relatives ever to be slaves. I feel very very hurt that anyone would want to make me pay for something I never had anything to do with nor believe in. But; if you want to get paid then all you Black Americans must pay my family for what they went through to make it so you can protest, lute, kill with your BLM and ANTIFA against us who gave you freedom.. Pathetic you are that would think of suck a thing. I know there are many Black Americans that do not thing like this and who love our USA just as I do. I would ask just how stupid can be but they would try and show me. This is insane. Don’t pay anyone anything until they can document that they are direct decendants of slaves and whether they were on a white or black owned slave plantation. If verified, then deduct all the payments and benefits derived from all programs aimed at giving a helping hand to blacks for umpteen decades. Then END all programs that were set up to assist blacks monetarily. It should come out to be about equal.
Do the blacks have to prove they are descended from Slaves owned by white American”s ? Or if desceded form slaves owned by non-American’s ie: British and then moved to America after the civil war?
Or is this really just another incidence of Leftist stealing money from working people and giving it to welfare cases and the undeserving and calling it “Fair Taxation”?
