A second person has been arrested and charged in connection with the execution-style slaying of a five-year-old North Carolina boy playing in his front yard, in a case that shocked the nation.

On Aug. 9, Darius Sessoms walked up to five-year-old Cannon Hinnant and shot the boy through the head as he played with his sisters. Sessoms was arrested and remains jailed on charges of first-degree murder.

Police now say they’ve arrested a second person in connection with the case.

“Wilson police said Aolani Takemi Marie Pettit, 21, of Wilson was arrested Tuesday. She was charged with felony accessory after the fact. Pettit received a $250,000 secured bond,” WTVD reports.

Pettit is reportedly Sessoms’ girlfriend. She is alleged to have provided him with transportation so he could go into hiding. Sessoms fled the scene and was arrested the next day 30 miles south of Wilson by U.S. Marshals.

Cannon’s father says Sessoms was pacing around his yard holding the gun. “I was looking at him as I was picking up Cannon, and I was so full of rage, but I could not leave my son’s side,” he said. “I just wanted to be with my son.” His father does not know why Sessom shot his son but does not suspect race was a motive.
