The push to phase out police officers with unarmed civilians continues.
Oregon’s senior United States Senator has discreetly introduced a plan for unarmed civilians to respond to mental health-related 911 calls.
These ad hoc first responders would replace police officers trained to maintain control and ensure safety.
Per Fox News:
U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, says a decades-old program in Eugene called CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out On The Streets) would be more effective on mental health-related calls than conventional police departments, OregonLive.com reported.
According to Wyden’s office, the CAHOOTS proposal “takes best practices from Oregon and encourages other states to adopt them through increased Medicaid funding,” the news outlet reported.

Programs such as CAHOOTS gained national attention in recent months amid talks by liberals And Democrats of defunding police departments in the wake of the May 25 death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. Portland and other Oregon cities have since become sites for frequent protests and rioting that have spread across the U.S. since Floyd’s death.
Wyden’s plan is already part of a broader Senate bill drawn up by Democrats called the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, OregonLive.com reported.

Well, I guess it is safe to say that the ghoulish Sen. Wydon has never been a cop, known a cop, or did a ride-along with real cops. By the time 911 gets a call on an emotionally disturbed person, it has gone beyond the “Let’s talk it out” stage. Most of the times the calls come into 911 because the individual is a threat to others or themselves. Often times a weapon is involved. Sometimes the location where the cops are called to is not the initial scene, as the EDP may have already assaulted or killed someone someplace else. Although somewhere down the line Dr. Phil may help, this is not the time or place. Most likely the encounter will either result in an arrest or a 72 hour Baker Act hospital stay. Either a squad car or ambulance is the appropriate mode of transport and not a Prius.

I have a lot of police friends. These types of calls are some of the most dangerous. They can turn violent quickly — many of these people also try to kill themselves or provoke the police into “suicide by police.” I just had this happen to my friend who is a police officer — thank God he FINALLY got the guy calmed down, but it took a long time. This is a very dangerous idea IMO, and I do NOT support this agenda.

It seems more logical to provide appropriate training to the police so if there is a call for such help and it turns out the individual needing help is violent and / or armed with a knife or gun that the responding individual is trained in dealing with someone with both mental issues as well as with dealing with violent criminals. This will prevent unarmed individuals trying to help these people from getting hurt themselves.
When the 911 operator receives the call, who will determine if it is a mental health issue or a crime-in-progress? A wrong determination could have serious consequences.

If this becomes law,you have to ask yourself how long will it last? I worked in social services, nobody gets paid enough to put your life on the line. It won’t take to many social workers to end up dead before the police are called back. Training for the police to defuse a mental health crisis is long overdue….oh wait we need to defund them. Real life situations gone horrible wrong for a social worker (who would call in the police when needed), and the police will be back on the job.
