The Supreme Court has validated the Trump administration’s carved-out exemptions to Obamacare’s contraception mandate, in a win for the president.

The ruling gives employers who object on moral or religious grounds to paying for their workers’ birth control the option not to provide it. (NBC News)

Since Congress passed Obamacare in 2010, the issue of which employers can decline offer contraceptive coverage has remained highly controversial.

Houses of worship and their auxiliaries were originally given an exemption, and a later rule allowed some non-profit religiously affiliated employers an accommodation: They could opt out of directly providing the coverage, as long as they gave notice of their objection. Their insurer or the government would then pick up the cost of the coverage.

In a 2014 case involving the Hobby Lobby stores, the Supreme Court said a private, religiously oriented, and closely held company could get an exemption from the contraceptive mandate on religious grounds.

The decision today involved Trump administration rules that would allow publicly traded companies and large universities to claim a religious objection for refusing to provide the coverage. Even more broadly, employers and schools with any moral objection would also be exempt from the requirement.

  1. Only a start. No employer should be required to provide ANY health insurance for employees. Health insurance has NOTHING to do with the proper conduct of a business, which is the only reasonable basis for any government requirement on a business. The employees are paying for the health insurance. The sources of funds for employer-provided insurance are the same as for taxes–lower salaries for employees, higher prices for consumers, and lower returns on investments (those same employees’ 401Ks and IRAs).

  2. With this ruling & the fact that if you opt out of having medical insurance, you DON’T have to pay the tax ( as John Roberts said it was ) it was a PENALTY really, Obamacare has disappeared from the Democratic agenda . as they never gave a crap about people having it or not.
It was ALWAYS about re-distribution of wealth ( forcing some people to pay for other peoples coverage ) AND controlling the population.
Can anyone explain how a law that doubled & tripled the amount of people that HAD TO BE COVERED, BUT NEVER INCREASED the number of doctors or other health care providers to take care of the increase. That would mean LESS times to be spent with patients.

  3. Who said that I had to pay for this. That is what it is when the government pays. This is TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION.
Folks, we are well past time for a revolution. The abuse of power by Pelosi, Schumer, McConnell and Cornyn has gone on too long. NO the Republicans are not opposing the Democrats. They are making sure the Democrats control as often as not.
