Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illinois) went after President Trump during a sermon at Chicago’s Lincoln United Methodist Church—saying that the Democrats planned to “eliminate” Trump, if they were to win a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018.

Gutierrez told the largely-Hispanic audience that, even though Trump was going after illegal immigrants, he instead that that Trump was the real criminal.

“For me, the major criminal that exists in the United States of America is called Donald Trump, he lives at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue at the White House,” Gutierrez explained.

“And we’re going to take actions today, and we’re going to take actions tomorrow. And there will soon be a [Democratic] majority in the House of Representatives…”

“I’m going to make sure that I am there to make sure of one thing,” he added. “That we write those articles of impeachment and take him to trial before the Senate and eliminate him as president of the United States of America.”

Democrats need to win 23 seats currently held by Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 in order to retake the majority. However, in the four special elections held in 2017 to replace Republicans that left Congress for the White House, Democrats failed to win back a single seat—despite spending tens of millions of dollars, and declaring one race in Georgia’s 6th District to be a “referendum” on Trump and the Republicans.
