John Kasich may have just slipped off the stage for the next debate. In a speech at the National Press Club, Kasich explained that his state will be forced to take refugees:

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) on Tuesday admitted that, as much as he would like to bar Syrian refugees from entering the U.S. in the wake of the Paris terror attacks, he doesn’t have the power to do so.

“We don’t have the authority,” Kasich said at an event at the National Press Club in Washington. “We can only express our concerns.” Kasich then segwayed into a conversation he had with his daughter in an effort to explain what a great guy he was:

“Daddy, why are you not gonna let these people come in? What’s that about daddy? Because as many here would agree, I do have a big heart. But I also have a big brain.”

Kasich ever the modest public servant, explained his position. “I know as some of my friends here would agree, sometimes I’m criticized for having a big heart. I do have a big heart, but I also have a pretty good brain, so I said to my daughter, Reesie, we understand these people are in trouble, but think about us putting someone in our town, or in our street, or in our country, that might do us harm.”

Kasich then relayed his daughter’s response: I understand daddy, why you said what you said.”

No word on whether he patted her on the head and gave her a lolly, but Kasich’s daughter is 15 years old. If you were intelligent enough to type that into the google machine, it takes all the heartwarming, doting dad tenderness out of Kasich’s story and turns it on its head, confirming what many of us expected: Kasich’s sneering condescension isn’t limited to voters who demand reasonable spending; he treats everyone that way. Worried about his expansion of Medicaid? You’re not Christ like. Worried about his squishy tendencies? You just don’t love people as much as he does. Kasich is the worst kind of politician, a guy who has pragmatically embraced moderation to save his own job in a purple state who pretends he’s being liberal out of some sense of enlightenment us troglodytes couldn’t possibly understand.

He won’t be missed on the debate stage.
