For months, Republican Presidential nominee frontrunner Donald Trump has focused his fire on big game, GOP insider targets. From Megyn Kelly to Jeb Bush to squishy Ohio governor John Kasich, the Donald’s pointed criticism has worked to fire up the grassroots and helped cement a lead that only fellow outsider Ben Carson has been able to match.

Not all are buying it, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz, whose electoral strategy seems to be to wait until Trump eventually drops out and pick up all his supporters. For a while, Cruz hung around, riding in the middle of the polls and guarding a substantial war chest. But now, two strong debate performances in a row have propelled him to the top tier of candidates, and Trump is taking notice.

Presidential candidate Donald Trump is threatening to go to war with Republican rival Ted Cruz. Trump was asked about Cruz’s rise on CNBC.

“Well he’s been very nice and very supportive of everything I’ve said, more than anybody else,” Trump said of Cruz.

“And we’ll see what happens. If he catches on, then I guess we’ll have to go to war. But so far we haven’t. We’ve been very supportive. We have a lot of the same ideas.”

That they both agree on many things means that, for the time being, Cruz and Trump are likely to stay on the same team. It behooves both of them to continue their sustained assault on establishment favorite Marco Rubio, who many view as weak on immigration. It stands to reason that they would continue their policy of detente until that task is finished,.

Then again, in this election, reason seems to have gone completely out the window.
