A GOP House conference call is scheduled for President Biden and House Speaker McCarthy to discuss a potential deal. Earlier, McCarthy expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, but clarified that no deal had been finalized yet. Biden also expressed optimism and mentioned they were very close to resolving the issues. Following their discussion, McCarthy took to Twitter to announce an agreement in principle that he believed would benefit the American people, stating:

This announcement comes ahead of Treasury Secretary Yellen’s June 5 deadline.
Following the breaking news, Speaker McCarthy issued a brief statement:
“I just spoke with the President twice today. After weeks of negotiations, we have reached an agreement in principle. While there is still plenty to be done, I believe this agreement has historic spending reductions, significant reforms to uplift people from poverty and encourage workforce participation, and it addresses government overreach. It does not include new taxes or government programs. There’s much more to be found within the bill.”
McCarthy mentioned that the agreement is still a work in progress, but the Speaker of the House seems largely satisfied with how the agreement in principle has unfolded.
