The Russians deployed military forces to Syria at the end of September to assist the Syrian government fight various rebel factions trying to overthrow it. Some of those rebels are backed by the United States while others are not so nice guys, including ISIS.

A member of Russia’s special forces was on a mission near the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra where Syrian government forces are engaged in an offensive against ISIS. He was coordinating Russian airstrikes to support the offensive when he was surrounded by ISIS fighters.

Here’s what Yahoo says happened next:

"The officer was carrying out a combat task in  area for a week, identifying crucial IS targets and passing exact coordinates for strikes with Russian planes," he said.

"The officer died as a hero, he drew fire onto himself after being located and surrounded by terrorists," he said. Moscow has been tight-lipped about having any soldiers on the ground throughout its campaign in Syria that began on September 30.

ISIS claims to have killed 5 Russian soldiers so far in the campaign, but the Russians deny that. The Russian defense ministry says it has conducted nearly 150 airstrikes over the past few days before the announcement.

The Russian soldier who called down air strikes upon him rather than be taken alive by ISIS shows the determination we have to fight them. As a civilized world, we will never surrender to these savages.
