Starbucks is issuing a mea culpa after a zealous barista booted six cops from a Tempe, Arizona store on July 4, after a customer complained they didn't "feel safe" in the officers' presence. (New York Post)

The java giant faced a huge backlash over the actions of staff in Tempe on July 4 — and now the chain has written to the Tempe Police Department to “sincerely apologize.”

“When those officers entered the store and a customer raised a concern over their presence, they should have been welcomed and treated with dignity and the utmost respect by our partners (employees),” wrote Rossann Williams, the chain’s executive vice president for US retail.

“Instead, they were made to feel unwelcome and disrespected, which is completely unacceptable.”

Williams insisted Starbucks has a “deep appreciation” for police, saying, “Our partners rely on your service and welcome your presence, which keeps our stores and the community a safe and welcoming place.”

It remains unknown if the barista will face any disciplinary action.
