Turkish-American political commentator Cenk Uygur rose to fame by creating The Young Turks (TYT). The progressive news outlet has millions of views per day, making it one of YouTube's most popular channels.

Uygur's rise did not come without controversy, however. Besides his blind idolatry of far-left views, the original Young Turks (which Uygur named his media empire after) was the political movement behind the slaughter of 1.5 million ethnic Armenians. In the past Uygur flatly denied the Armenian Genocide. By 2016 his position on the well-documented massacre evolved, somewhat. Uygur argued, "My mistake at the time was confusing myself for a scholar of history, which I most certainly am not. I don't want to make the same mistake again, so I am going to refrain from commenting on the topic of the Armenian Genocide, which I do not know nearly enough about."

Despite all that, Uygur is running for Congress to fill the House seat vacated by former Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA).

The Hill's John Bowden further reports:

An FEC filing dated Wednesday announces the formation of the "Cenk for Congress" committee, with Uygur listed as the group's treasurer. Uygur addressed the filing on Twitter, writing: "To all reporters: No comment."

Uygur aligns himself with the progressive base of the Democratic Party. In 2016 he endorsed Bernie Sanders during the Democratic presidential primary. He has done so again this cycle.

Hill's district will be the site of a special election following her resignation last month due to the publication of nude pictures of her as well as an investigation by the House Ethics Committee into allegations of an improper relationship with a House staffer. Hill had also admitted to an affair with a campaign staffer, though that relationship did not break House rules.

She resigned while blaming the photos' publication on her estranged husband, Kenny Heslep, and has vowed to fight "revenge porn" after leaving office.

Another troubling issue not addressed by the mainstream media is that as a young woman, Hill has not had to grapple with the same questions men in her position have faced. Regardless of gender, as a Member of Congress, Hill exerted tremendous influence over the employees she reportedly seduced.
