Missouri Senator Thinks This Should Happen To The President
In five words, Missouri’s most controversial state lawmaker threatened her political career, started a Secret Service investigation, and created headaches for Democrats across the country.
State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-St. Louis) admitted in an early morning Facebook post that she wishes for President Donald Trump’s assassination. Her despicable comment came during an exchange with a local left-wing activist, Christopher Gagné.
Gagné complained that his cousin, allegedly a Secret Service agent, had to protect Trump. Unable to remain silent, Chappelle-Nadal revealed her true feelings, “I hope Trump is assassinated!”
Realizing the consequences of what she wrote, Chappell-Nadal deleted her post – but not quickly enough.
Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill, U.S. Representative William Lacy Clay (D-St. Louis), Missouri Democratic Party Chair Stephen Webber, and Missouri Senate Democratic Caucus Leader, Gina Walsh have demanded her expulsion from the general assembly.
Instead, Chappelle-Nadal refuses to apologize or resign. She attributes her behavior to frustration with the president over the riots in Charlottesville and mounting constituent concerns.
Chappelle-Nadal has courted controversy before. In 2015, she tried to boot then-Governor Jay Nixon out of office for his response to the shooting death of Michael Brown. The effort stalled, but her attacks continued, culminating in a public cursing out of Nixon. Four years earlier, she fought another state senator at a Lil Wayne concert.
The Secret Service has started an investigation. The agents assigned the case intend to ascertain the purpose and meaning behind the threat to determine if the volatile senator broke federal law. If they decide Chappelle-Nadal did, the case goes to the U.S. Attorney's office.
Facing the wrath of Democrats and the scorn of Republicans will be the least of her worries then.
