Majority of House Dems Now Support Idea Only 10 Percent of Americans Do
A Democrat plan to outlaw private health care and require all medical care to be administered by government reached an important legislative milestone, with a majority of House Democrats now sponsoring the measure.

Referred to as “Medicare For All,” even though it would require taking away Medicare benefits from seniors to pay for it, reached its 118th co-sponsor when Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) added his name to the legislation by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-CA).

With “a majority of the majority” supporters could force a vote to pass the legislation and retaliate against any Democrat who objects, increasing the odds the measure can pass.

“We mean a complete transformation of our health care system and we mean a system where there are no private insurance companies that provide these core benefits,” Jayapal said upon introducing the measure in February. “We mean universal care, everybody in, nobody out.”

Under “Medicare For All,” private health insurance would be banned, including policies enjoyed by union members. The federal government would be the only allowed outlet for health coverage.

Advocates claim it will make health care affordable, even though it’s been shown to universally increase health care costs by promising providers free money. Where savings have been demonstrated they’ve been achieved by denying health care to sick patients, often the elderly, or by cutting payments to doctors to the point where providers leave the industry, creating doctor shortages.

Many Democrats are openly nervous about the proposal’s aggressive socialism and track record of failure. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who prefers the public-private hybrid model created by Obamacare, is reluctant to bring the bill to a vote.

“Show me how you think you can get there,” said Pelosi in April. “We all share the value of health care for all Americans — quality, affordable health care for all Americans. What is the path to that?”

The House Speaker serves at the pleasure of a House majority, and if a majority of a Speaker’s party opposes him or her, they can “move to vacate” the position and elect a new Speaker. Former House Speaker John Boehner was forced to resign when it appeared a majority of House Republicans were reluctant to continue his service.

With a majority of the House Democrat Caucus is co-sponsoring Medicare For All, they can simply overrule Pelosi and pass it over her objections.
