For Democrats worried about electability, Montana Governor Steve Bullock has a case to make.

The chief executive of Big Sky Country won as a Democrat in 2016 by four points – despite Donald Trump's 20 point thumping of Hillary Clinton the same night.

Bullock is the only one of 22 Democratic candidates to have won in a red state.

NBC News further reports:

As a Democratic governor of a state that Trump won by 20 points, I don't have the luxury of just talking to people who agree with me," Bullock said in a video announcement of his candidacy. "I go all across our state's 147,000 square miles and look for common ground to get things done."

The Montana governor declared his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in a video Tuesday, highlighting the fact that he’s the only candidate in the race to have won in a red state.

“We need to defeat Donald Trump in 2020 and defeat the corrupt system that lets campaign money drown out the people’s voice, so we can finally make good on the promise of a fair shot for everyone,” Bullock said in a statement.

The governor's relatively late entry, imposed on him by Montana's legislative schedule, isn't the only hurdle he faces.

Bullock is hardly a household name, even in households of political junkies. At a gathering of progressive activists last summer in New Orleans, Bullock had to introduce himself and moderate a panel on Net Neutrality in a small room, while better-known contenders like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., spoke to thousands in the main hall.
