"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops." - Noah Webster

The above quote from Noah Webster comes from his essay entitled “An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution” which was published in October of 1787.

Webster is regarded as the "Father of American Scholarship and Education." His textbooks taught children to read and write for 100 years, and even today his name is mentioned every time people refer to their Merriam-Webster dictionary.
