Sen. Tillis (R-N.C.) represents a marginally, but still reliably, Republican state.

That made his break with President Trump over his emergency declaration all the more striking.

"It wouldn’t provide enough funding to adequately secure our borders," Tillis claimed. "I don’t believe a national emergency declaration is the solution."

Moreover, he warned the decision would enable future presidents – including liberal Democrats – to seize unchecked executive power.
