Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) allegedly drove drunk off of a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island and then left 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne (thinking she was already dead) to slowly die in an air pocket inside the submerged vehicle. The story and subsequent cover-up was viewed with suspicion by some in the media, and although this Kennedy would never be elected president, he was not held responsible for the woman’s death.
