Since February 20, 2014, Russian military intervention has turned the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine into a warzone.

Unmarked Russian military units invaded and pro-Russian militias rose up en masse in August 2014 after five months of artillery salvos.

Though the United States under President Obama introduced international sanctions against Russia, which in fairness caused the ruble to collapse, they have not alleviated Ukraine's plight.

After five years of low-intensity conflict, 15,000 dead, and one-and-a-half million Ukrainians displaced, 7% of Ukrainian territory is under Russian occupation.
