Baltimore has a murder rate of 51 per 100,000, making it the second-highest in America.

Unlike other large cities – most prominently New York – that have seen murder rates plummet in recent years, Baltimore's crime epidemic is out of control amid few opportunities for young males to escape life in the inner city.

That makes Maryland's largest city as deadly as Venezuela, a nation besieged by economic crises and civil strife.
