2.) Crimea Goes Bye-Bye

Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula between February and March 2014. The flagrant violation of Ukraine's sovereignty began with the deployment of Russian special forces, not wearing uniforms with their country's insignia, to strategically essential sites across the peninsula.  

The involuntary return of a chunk of territory the size of Iowa to Russia occurred without almost any military resistance.
