Golden serves as the U.S. Representative for Maine’s largely rural 2nd district.
He beat Republican incumbent Bruce Poliquin in November thanks to a controversial, albeit legal, voting system used in Maine known as ranked-choice.
Poliquin prevailed in the initial vote tally. However, the state’s new ranked-choice system of voting allows voters to rank candidates in their order of preference and automatically transfers their votes if no one gets more than 50 percent.
Under those circumstances, election officials certified Golden as the winner more than a week after Election Day.
