20.) Rep. Claudine Schneider

The only woman ever elected to Congress from Rhode Island, Rep. Schneider represented the state’s 2nd district from 1981-1991.

Instead of running for re-election in 1990, Schneider unsuccessfully challenged incumbent Democratic Senator Claiborne Pell.

After leaving office, she taught at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
