Melania Trump is being attacked by the mainstream media — for telling a White House landscaper to cut down a dead tree.
Some publications published misleading headlines about Mrs. Trump’s landscaping decisions, making it seem like she arbitrarily ordered the historic tree torn out.
In reality, a team of specialists informed the First Lady that the tree, planted by Andrew Jackson, was dying and needed to be removed because it posed a hazard for anyone standing under it. Besides, a growing system of poles and wires, which had come to support the tree, were deteriorating as well.
But, rather than portray the story accurately, the media painted Melania Trump as a callous tree-hater:
Newsweek wrote, “Melania Trump orders removal of the near-200-year-old tree from the White House.”
The National Post’s headline? “Melania Trump orders much of a large magnolia tree planted in 1835 to be cut down.”
CNN wrote, “Exclusive: Iconic White House tree to be cut down.”
Even Britain’s The Independent jumped on, writing: “Melania Trump orders White House tree from 1800s to be cut down.”
The reality was far different: the frail magnolia tree presented a danger — but Mrs. Trump took great lengths to preserve pieces of the historic tree so that landscapers could try replanting it in the same area.
Not everyone is unfairly going after Mrs. Trump: Chelsea Clinton defended the First Lady and praised her preservation efforts, tweeting: “Thank you @FLOTUS for preserving part of a tree I & so many have treasured.”
