Joe Biden was supposed to be a juggernaut who would lead Democrats to a tidal wave victory over Donald Trump.
Just months later, a floundering Biden could be knocked out of the Democrat race by a small-state socialist.
That’s because after crushing losses to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, Biden’s towering lead in South Carolina has dwindled to just five points over Sanders, according to a new CBS News-YouGov poll.
“The poll, which was finished before Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won the Nevada caucuses, revealed that Biden’s support has fallen by double-digits and that he leads the progressive senator by just 5 points. Biden, who once led the field by nearly 30 points, earned 28 percent support among Democratic voters and independents who plan to vote in the primary,” The Hill reports.
If those numbers hold up, it could start the final four days of Joe Biden’s 50-year political career.
Biden’s massive lead over other Democrats among black voters has splintered, meaning the wipeout wins he needed in the February 29 South Carolina primary and the largely black southern states who vote on March 3 could be squeakers or even losses.
The once-energetic and outgoing Biden has been nearly invisible in debates and his public appearances are known more for his memory lapses and flubs than memorable lines.
He’s also nearly broke.

Biden’s campaign had just $7.1 million in the bank at the beginning of February, POLITICO reports. That’s not enough to sustain a national campaign going into South Carolina and Super Tuesday states.
Super PACs have been pouring in millions to support Biden and other “mainstream” Democrats, but under federal law, they cannot coordinate with the candidate’s campaign.
That means that while super PACs can flood the airwaves with their own ads supporting a candidate if that candidate is broke he can’t make campaign appearances or deploy staff – meaning his campaign is dead.
If Biden barely wins South Carolina on February 29 and can only squeak out some southern wins March 3, the most promising stretch of his campaign will be a four-day virtual death march.
With little else offering a chance of a comeback, Biden will have little choice but to pull the plug and hope billionaire Michael Bloomberg or Pete Buttigieg can prevent a Sanders win.
