Marco Rubio is trying to break out of the range of 10-15% that he appears to be stuck in. Rubio is desperately trying to establish himself as a credible alternative to Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, and he’s taken to naked pandering to do it.
Rubio’s first instance of Pandering 101 was on “Meet The Press” this Sunday. Rubio was asked by Chuck Todd whether or not he supported allowing illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S. Rubio gave this answer, according to Politico:
Sen. Marco Rubio says people who immigrated to the U.S. illegally but haven’t committed any major crimes could be allowed to stay.
In an interview airing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Florida contender for the Republican presidential nomination said felons shouldn’t be allowed to stay, but those who commit lesser crimes could still qualify. In this interview, he didn’t specify whether those allowed to stay would ever be able to become citizens.
Rubio again skirted the path to citizenship question in Iowa on Monday. He was asked point blank whether or not he supported a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Rubio said that it wasn’t a “yes or no answer.” Rubio has a long history of supporting a path to citizenship.
The second example of Pandering 101 came also on Sunday. Rubio was asked on “Face the Nation” why he bought a gun. Here’s his answer:
“I have a right to protect my family,” Rubio said in an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “I have a right to protect my family if someone were to come after us. In fact, if ISIS were to visit us or our communities at any moment, the last line of defense between ISIS and my family is the ability I have to protect my family from them or from a criminal or anyone else who seeks to do us harm. Millions of Americans feel that way.”
If Rubio is elected, he will have 24 hour Secret Service protection. As a Senator, he has armed guards protecting him. While Rubio has a consistent pro-Second Amendment record, this answer really seems like it’s pandering.
The best explanation for why Rubio hasn’t seemed to make any progress is because he’s such a transparent panderer. This is a year where Republican voters are demanding authenticity. But Rubio just comes off as just another politician and Republicans don’t want that.
