Assistant Attorney General Peter J. Kadzik will be leading the Department of Justice’s investigation into the new emails discovered last week by the FBI on Clinton aide Huma Abedin’s laptop.
The problem? He’s closely tied to Hillary Clinton and her team.
Kadzik is a close friend of Hillary’s campaign chairman, John Podesta—having been classmates with him in the 1970s. Kadzik and Podesta dined together at Podesta’s home in January, during the height of the FBI’s investigation into Clinton, and meet for dinner regularly.
Their friendship extended to their professional life: in a leaked email, Kadzik was caught giving a “heads up” to Podesta about when the State Department would begin releasing Hillary’s emails.
But Kadzik’s ties go beyond just his friendship with Podesta. Kadzik had been a donor to Hillary Clinton—giving her Senate pac, HillPAC, $1,000 on February 6, 2006. He would later make two more contributions during Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential run in 2008.
Kadzik’s son even applied for a job with Hillary’s campaign back in May 2015—using his father as a reference.
In an email to Podesta, Kadzik’s son wrote: “I was with my father and Amy recently, and they both suggested I reach out to you… I would love to find some time to connect and see if there may be an opportunity for me to help on the campaign.”
A Justice Department spokesman stressed that the bulk of Kadzik’s job would be to respond to inquiries from Congress—and, thus, that there would be no conflict of interest. But putting a close Clinton ally anywhere near her investigation is something that may not be palatable to the American public.
