Democrat presidential candidate and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is backing the idea of federal tax on meat to somehow change global temperatures.

During a question-and-answer session at a South Carolina campaign event, a supporter named “Britta” asked Sanders about the proposal, reading the question from her cellphone.

“Animal agriculture is to blame for the majority of climate change and is the leading cause of deforestation, water and air pollution, and biodiversity loss,” she said.

That claim is false.

“With that being known, what do you plan on doing to ensure that Americans limit their consumption of animal products, Germany has imposed a meat tax in hopes of limiting this consumption?,” she asked.

“Thank you for the question. It’s a good question.,” said Sanders.

It was not a good question.

“All I can say, if we believe, as I do and you do, that climate change is real,” Sanders continued, “we’re going to have to tackle it in every single area, including agriculture.”

“We will certainly, you’re right, look at agriculture, we’ve got to look at every cause of the crisis that we face,” he went on to say.

“The Farm Animal Investment Risk and Return, an organization representing investors with assets exceeding $4 trillion, recently estimated that the federal government could impose a meat tax within five years,” Tyler Tate, an associate at the nonprofit Americans for Tax Reform, noted in an April 2018 Washington Examiner opinion piece.
