Twice Deported Immigrant Charged In Girlfriends Murder
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Raul Perez's defense attorney did not dispute that his client killed Karla Guadalupe-Magana almost 10 months ago inside his Wyoming apartment.

Giving his opening statement Tuesday, Aug. 29, attorney Norman Miller instead argued what the 43-year-old's state of mind was in the early hours of Oct. 26, 2016, when he allegedly strangled his girlfriend.

"Raul Perez was in love," Miller told a jury Tuesday on the first day of testimony in Perez's murder trial. "They had been dating a few months, and she apparently didn't feel the same way he did. She indicated she had a boyfriend on the side.

Perez is charged with felony murder. He is being held on an immigration detainer, and has two prior deportations to Mexico on his record (in 2005 and 2008).
