Trump's Ten Million

Say what you want about President Donald Trump, but the guy knows how to fundraise.

Last night, Trump hosted the first fundraising dinner of his already-launched 2020 re-election campaign. Held down the street from the White House at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, the formal event cost $35,000 per plate. Since 300 people were expected to attend, Trump’s total haul was about $10 million—not bad for two hours of schmoozing.

But not everyone was thrilled that the event was even taking place. As guests and the President’s motorcade arrived, they were greeted by dozens of protesters, who held signs and chanted, “Shame! Shame! Shame!”

The White House Press Corps was also, apparently, angry that they weren’t allowed to attend the closed-door event—especially after Trump’s Deputy Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, initially told them they would be able to hear Trump’s remarks, before reversing herself.

The money raised by Trump will be split among his 2020 campaign, the Republican National Committee, and several other Republican groups, since each attendee is technically only able to donate $5,400 per organization.

Trump broke with tradition by launching his 2020 re-election campaign on Inauguration Day, rather than waiting until after the midterm elections. But having an active campaign has allowed Trump to continue to host large rallies, which energize his supporters and allows him to stay connected to the people who voted him into office in the first place. He’s already hosted 5 rallies since being inaugurated as President.
