Trump's Deportation Crew Hits Sanctuary Cities

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has made nearly 500 arrests in four days—during an operation that specifically targeted so-called “sanctuary cities.”

ICE confirmed on Thursday that agents had arrested hundreds of illegal immigrants in the California cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose, as well as the Boston, Massachusetts, area. The vast majority of those arrested had criminal records—including a gang member in Los Angeles who had “rammed multiple law enforcement vehicles in an effort to evade arrest,” according to officials.

President Trump came to office promising to restrict illegal immigration and build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. But, even without passing any new laws, Trump has already achieved dramatic reductions in illegal immigration just by vigorously enforcing the laws that already exist. Since Trump took office in January, illegal immigration has plummeted by as much as 53 percent.

The latest series of ICE raids—conducted right in the heart of the country’s most liberal cities—is a clear shot across the bow for the Trump Administration. Over the past few months, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has specifically gone after cities that refused to cooperate with federal immigration agents, threatening to withhold federal dollars.

ICE’s Acting Director Tom Woman explained that sanctuary city policies make raids like these more necessary. Because sanctuary cities often don’t allow cops to notify federal agents when they arrest illegal immigrants and deny access to jails, ICE is forced to do it alone—and “dedicate more resources to conduct at-large arrests in these communities.”
