A top Democratic Senator has admitted that no amount of gun laws would have prevented last week’s Las Vegas shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who is a strong advocate for gun control, went on CBS's “Face the Nation.” In the interview, journalist John Dickerson asked her point-blank if any law could have stopped Stephen Paddock, the man who shot up a country music festival last Sunday.

“No,” said Feinstein. “He passed background checks registering for handguns and other weapons on multiple occasions.”

Paddock had purchased his guns legally—and, without a criminal record, there was nothing before his murderous actions to suggest it would be unsafe to allow him to own firearms.

Despite her admission that firearm restrictions did not prevent the Las Vegas shooting, Feinstein still plans to move forward on passing new gun control laws, such as banning “bump stocks,” a modification used to make a semi-automatic rifles fire like an automatic weapon.

"Regulations aren't going to do it. We need a law," said Feinstein. "It can't be changed by another president… And I hope that Americans will step up and say, 'Enough is enough. Congress, do something.'"
