Former NFL wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez is considering a run for Ohio's 16th Congressional District, Republican sources told a Cleveland newspaper.

Gonzalez, 32, who played for the Indianapolis Colts and briefly for the New England Patriots, is holding meetings in preparation for a potential run for the seat currently held by Republican Rep. Jim Renacci, Cleveland.com reports.

Renacci, a former businessman and mayor is expected to run for governor next year, leaving the seat open.

Gonzalez has reportedly met with the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) to discuss the potentially entering the 2018 race but has not announced publicly. A source close to Gonzalez told the paper that he is seriously considering the run, and will make a decision soon.
