This Criminal Illegal Wasn't Deported. Guess What Happened Next

An illegal immigrant has been charged with murdering a teacher in Massachusetts.

Jose Melendez, 54, strangled Sandra Heir, 49 in her apartment. Her body was later found by authorities on February 5.

Police combed through evidence, eventually finding DNA at the scene that matched Melendez and connected him to the case. Melendez was arrested last week, and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have placed an immigration detainer on him.

Melendez had a long criminal history. In 2014, he broke probation after being convicted for breaking and entering. In addition to Heir’s murder, he also faces charges in two drug-related crimes.

Heir—a respected educator and beloved member of the community in Worcester, Massachusetts—continues to be mourned by friends, colleagues, and loved ones.

"She was just a wonderful person," said John Bradley, a close friend of Heir. "Very friendly, sociable, very healthy – very into running and taking care of herself.”

"If you ever needed a good laugh, she was the one that would give it to you," added longtime friend Carrie Gladden. "She really would give you the shirt off her back."
Melendez is due back in court on April 13. If released into ICE custody, he will face deportation.
