Pentagon to Build New Immigration Detention Facilities
The Department of Homeland Security is calling in the cavalry.

U.S. troops have received orders to build six "temporary facilities" to detain thousands of migrants while the federal government reviews their asylum requests.

Besides erecting housing, DHS is asking the Defense Department to provide logistical support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The migrant border surge has overwhelmed authorities, forcing ICE to release an average of 1,000 illegal immigrants a day.

From January to March, deportation officials released about 107,000 migrants into border states. Relatively few are expected to appear for their court hearings.

DHS' request follows the recent reappropriation by the DoD of $1.5 billion to construct 80 miles of border wall.

The transfer is not expected to affect military readiness, although Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan cautioned that DoD eventually expects "DHS to be effective and stand alone."
