If you find yourself in a life-or-death struggle with an armed assailant, do yourself a favor and disregard what NBC just told its viewers.

Today Show correspondent, Jeff Rosen explained how to defend yourself if caught the middle of a convenience store robbery. Instead of encouraging law-abiding citizens to use their Second Amendment rights or extolling the virtue of firearms training, Rosen showed how throwing whatever you can find at the gunman, in this case, a packet of oatmeal cookies, could save your life.

Rosen, if nothing else, is consistently ludicrous. While discussing a rise in muggings, he touted a smartphone app as the best means of defense. In a report on home invasions, he suggested spraying attackers with bug spray.

Even if a Snickers hit with enough force to disorient a hardened thug, you would still have to sprint out of the store praying for a miracle to avoid the bullets likely headed your direction at 700 miles per hour.

Fortunately, there is a tried and true method to deterring violent felons: a vigilant gun owner. For 30 years, the Department of Justice has known that higher gun ownership rates correlate with reduced violent crime rates. Good luck explaining that to Matt Lauer and company.
