Two people connected to a Mexican drug cartel have been arrested in Mebane, North Carolina—after a triple kidnapping last week.

Briana Lizeth Cardenas and Hector Manuel Lopez Jr. are accused of kidnapping three people at gunpoint last Tuesday. Authorities allege that the kidnapping is connected to Mexican drug trafficking—namely, the dangerous Sinaloa drug cartel.

Two victims were released on Thursday, but Cardenas and Lopez held a third victim—a 20-year-old male—until Thursday, when he was rescued by police.

The 20-year-old suffered numerous injuries from being beating during his kidnapping, and is currently being treated in the hospital.

Cardenas and Lopez were both arrested shortly after. It’s not yet clear exactly why they targeted their specific victims.

For her part in the kidnappings, Cardenas has been charged with three counts of accessory before the fact of a first-degree kidnapping and armed robbery. She is currently in police custody at the Almance County Detention Center, in lieu of a $250,000 bail.

Lopez faces even more serious charges: three counts of first-degree kidnapping, three counts of armed robbery, and larceny of a stolen vehicle. In addition, Lopez also faces unrelated charges of first-degree kidnapping, trafficking cocaine, and trafficking cocaine by delivery. He’s being held at the same detention center of a $1.3 million bail.
