Two friends sat in a car in Carcassonne enjoying their afternoon in the picturesque hilltop town, just as anyone would until a Moroccan man claiming allegiance to ISIS changed their lives forever.

He shot the two passengers in cold blood, killing one. The gunman then took the car, using it as cover when police arrived.

He opened fire, critically wounding one of the officers, before speeding away to the neighboring community of Trèbes.

Once there, the terrorist got out of his vehicle and entered a supermarket, which ultimately became his tomb.

Inside he killed two people in quick succession and wounded others.

He then took hostages and began a standoff with police.

Colonel Arnaud Beltrame, of the national police force, voluntarily swapped himself for the hostages in a selfless act of heroism.

Three hours later, the terrorist stabbed and shot Beltrame to death.

As soon as police heard their commander's screams, tactical units stormed the building and killed the assailant.

Beltrame posthumously received the Legion of Honour, France's equivalent of the Medal of Honor.
