Los Angeles officials sued the federal government over Department of Justice grant application rules that are aimed at cracking down on so-called “sanctuary cities,” the city attorney said Tuesday.

The Los Angeles area could lose out on a federal grant used for fighting gang crime, anticipated to be worth about $1.9 million, if the city is unable to comply with new grant rules recently announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer has said local officials will have a difficult time complying with one requirement that the city notify the Department of Homeland Security at least 48 hours before it plans to release “an alien in the jurisdiction’s custody” wanted by U.S. immigration officials.

Feuer on Tuesday described the administration’s plan as “overreaching,” and that’s what prompted L.A. to act.
