California hiked out-of-state tuition prices – but one group is curiously exempt: illegal immigrants.

According to The College Fix, illegal aliens will “retain California residency even as they remain in the country illegally” and will thus be “unaffected” by the tuition hike.

At the beginning of March, the University of California Board of Regents voted to increase tuition on out-of-state students by 3.5 percent. That translates to about $1,000 in additional tuition costs per student per year.

Any illegal immigrant who attended at least three years of high school in California, however, will continue to get a free pass to pay the in-state tuition – even though they’re not legal residents of the United States.

In an email to The College Fix, Clair Down, the UC system’s spokesperson, wrote: “UC does not ask its students nor applicants for their immigration status. California residents pay in-state tuition, and they are required to show proof of residence.”

“All students – regardless of immigration status – are subject to the same tuition and fee structures, based on their residency status,” she added.
