A Mexican illegal immigrant accused of raping a 13-year-old girl had been deported or voluntarily removed from the U.S. a whopping 19 times since 2003.

Now, three U.S. Republican Senators are leading the charge to get answers—and figure out what went wrong in America’s broken immigration system, that allowed a dangerous rapist to keep coming back even after he was known to authorities.

In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, along with Senators Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts of Kansas, have demanded that the Department of Homeland Security provide them with the immigration records for 38-year-old Tomas Martinez-Maldonado, the alleged rapist who currently awaits trial in a jail in Geary County, Kansas.

Martinez-Maldonado also had two misdemeanor convictions, both in Arizona. He served 60 days in 2013, before being deported—but broke the law again in 2015, serving 165 days, after which he was deported yet again. His rape trial is scheduled for January 10.

Grassley, Moran, and Roberts called Martinez-Maldonado’s case “extremely disturbing” and asked Johnson to provide answers on how he was able to keep entering the United States, and remain in the country.

Johnson has not yet made a public response.
