A man in Augusta, Maine was having a dispute with his landlord over possible bed bugs in his apartment. He claimed that the landlord had not done enough to remove the tiny pests. So he took his complaint to municipal code enforcement and General Assistance on Friday morning. General Assistance told him that he did not qualify for assistance.

So the man came back Friday afternoon and this time he had a cup with him. The cup was full of bed bugs. As soon as city employees knew he had the bedbugs, they escorted him out of the building.

According to Fox9.com, the building was closed for the rest of the day in order to allow an exterminator to fumigate the building. The man, who has not been identified, was detained and questioned by police after he left. No charges were filed against the man who brought the bed bugs.

Matt Nazar, a city development official, believes that they got all of the bed bugs in the building. The area where the bugs were released has no carpet, it’s all hard tiles and hard surfaces, so there are no places for bedbugs to hide easily,” Nazar told CentralMaine.com. “We strongly suspect we were able to contain the potential problem, by moving so rapidly and scooping the bugs up and into plastic trash bags as soon as possible. The pest control company is fairly confident, based on what they could see, that they got everything.”

Nazar chalks up the incident to misdirected anger. “He told police he wanted them to experience the same thing he was experiencing,” Nazar said.

According to local media, bedbugs are a problem in Augusta. They do feed on human blood, but thankfully do not carry any diseases.
