A car bomb exploded outside of Afghanistan's Bagram Air Base, killing three U.S. service members and a civilian contractor earlier today.

Per Stars and Stripes:

Three other American service members were wounded in the attack, which occurred late Monday near the Bagram gate, the military's Resolute Support command said in a statement.

The area outside Bagram, about 40 miles north of Kabul, was cordoned off following the blast, said Abdul Shakoor Qudoosi, the local district governor. He said no civilians were hurt.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming on Twitter that the suicide car bombing destroyed one armored vehicle and killed or injured several foreign troops.

The three deaths bring the number of U.S. servicemembers killed in Afghanistan this year to seven.

Bagram houses thousands of American and allied personnel. The airfield bristles with guns and is capable of handling any size aircraft.
