Richard Lugar served as a United States Senator from Indiana from 1977 to 2013.

A young Lugar rose to prominence when he gave the keynote address at the 1972 Republican National Convention, as the Mayor of Indianapolis.

His greatest legislative achievement was the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) Program, better known as the Nunn-Lugar Act, which helped secure and dismantle nuclear weapons in former Soviet Union states after the collapse of the U.S.S.R.
