Israel began construction on its West Bank security barrier in 2002 to prevent Palestinian insurgents from committing acts of terror.

Controversy surrounds the wall. While Israel considers it a bulwark against Islamic terrorism, Palestinians decry it as a symbol of segregation.

Israeli authorities erected the barrier during the Second Intifada, which the Palestinians themselves describe as an uprising against the Jewish state.

Palestinian suicide bombings and Israeli's military response inflicted thousands of casualties.

Some – including Yasser Arafat's wife – claim the Palestinian Liberation Organization pre-planned the uprising.

After the wall's construction, suicide bombings dropped from 73 in the West Bank (between 2000 and July 2003) to 12 (from August 2003 to the end of 2006).
