A 1,700-mile sand berm protects Morocco from the Polisario Front.

Polisario rebels represent the Sahrawi people who long to drive Morocco from Western Sahara.

After years of fighting, the Moroccan government isolated the insurgents, courtesy of a huge berm manned by the army.

Artillery salvos and sniping by the Polisario continue to this day, however, they only control territory east of the wall – almost entirely uninhabited desert.
